நாம் இன்று வாழ்ந்து வரும் வாழ்க்கை முறைகள் அல்லது வாழ்வியல் சங்க கால தமிழர்கள் வாழ்வியலோடு ஒத்துப் பார்க்கையில் நிறைய மாற்றங்கள் உள்ளன. பண்டைய தமிழகத்தின் வரலாற்றை, பல்லவர்கள் காலத்திற்கு முன்பும், பல்லவர்கள் காலத்திற்கு பின்பும் என்ற கால அளவை வைத்தும் குறிப்பிடலாம். பல்லவர்களின் காலம் பொ.யு. 250 முதல் பொ.யு.700 என்று கூறப்படுகிறது. பண்டைய தமிழக மன்னர்கள் வரலாற்றில் சேர, சோழ, மற்றும் பாண்டிய மன்னர்கள் முன்னோடியாக இருந்தாலும், அதற்கு சமமான அளவில் கருதப்படவேண்டியது பல்லவ மன்னர்களும் மற்றும் அவர்களுடைய ஆட்சிக் காலமும். இவர்களுடைய ஆட்சிக் காலத்தில் தான் அப்போதைய தமிழகத்தில் பெருமளவில் நாகரீக மற்றும் கலாச்சார மாறுபாடுகள் ஏற்பட்டன என்று கூறலாம். இந்த மாறுபாடுகளினால் பண்டைய தமிழகம் புதியதோர் நாகரீக பரிமாணத்திற்குள் செல்ல நேர்ந்தது. அப்போதைய மக்களின் வாழ்வியல் முறை வேறு ஒரு புதிய வாழ்வியல் முறையையும் கடைப்பிடிக்க நேர்ந்தது. ஆனால், பல்லவர்கள் யார், அவர்கள் எங்கிருந்து வந்தார்கள் என்ற ஒரு பெரும் கேள்விக்கு ஒரு உறுதியான பதில் இன்னும் கிடைக்கப் பெற இயலவில்லை. பல்லவர்கள் யார் என்பது குறித்த தெளிவான தகவல்கள் மற்றும் தொல்பொருள் ஆதாரங்கள் நமக்கு இன்னும் சரியாக கிடைக்கவில்லை. பல்லவர்கள் குறித்த பல்வேறு கருத்துக்கள் பல வரலாற்றாசிரியர்களால் முன் வைக்கப்படுகிறது. ஆனால் பல்லவர்கள் தோற்றம் குறித்த ஒரு தெளிவான குறிப்புகள் கிடைக்கவில்லை. பல்லவர்கள் யார், அவர்களின் மூதாதையர் யார், அவர்களின் பூர்வீகம் என்ன என்பதைக் குறித்த ஆய்வு இந்நூலில் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டுள்ளது.
In the history of ancient Tamil Nadu, the well known important kings are Chera, Chola and Pandiyan kings. If we see the history of these kings, they are generally classified in to Early Cheras, Cholas and Pandyans; and Later Cheras, Cholas and Pandyans. These classifications are based on either i) the time period of Tamil Sangam period i.e. during and after the Tamil Sangam period, or ii) before the rule of and after the rule of Kalabras. Apart from this, one more theory that can be postulated is that, which is based on the time period of Pallava kingdom, i.e. before the rule of Pallavas and after the rule of Pallavas. The time period of Pallava kingdom was between 250 CE and 700 CE. Though in the history of ancient Tamil Nadu, Chera, Chola and Pandiyan kings are considered as the pioneers, equally the Pallava kings and their ruling period also should be considered as one of the pioneers of the ancient Tamil history. During the rule of Pallava kingdom various significant civilization, social and cultural changes were happened in the ancient Tamil Nadu. These changes led the ancient Tamil Nadu to enter in to a new civilisation dynamics and the people in those days happened to adopt new lifestyle system.
There are various theories or concepts postulated about the origin of the Pallava kings or kingdom among history scholars. There are no concrete answers have been so far found for the questions like who are Pallavas, from where they came, etc.
This book is mainly aimed at to find the origin of Pallavas and their ancestry, from the evidences of civilisation changes that happened during Pallava rule, from available archaeological evidences and from the details about the kingdoms that existed in Western & Middle Asia during those time period.
