Description

The Samhitas contain hymns (suktas) and mantras in praise of various deities. Some hymns also speak about the Supreme Reality (Parabrahman). They include mantras used in rituals such as yajnas, yagas, homas, and worship.

The Brahmanas are considered a part of the Vedas. They explain how the mantras are to be used and provide detailed interpretations. They describe how rituals should be performed, when they should be conducted, and what materials are required.

The Aranyakas are generally believed to be studied in the शांत and peaceful environment of forests. They explain the philosophical aspects hidden within rituals and sacrifices.

The Upanishads deal with philosophical concepts such as Brahman (the Absolute), the individual soul (jiva), the universe (jagat), creation, and liberation (moksha). The Upanishads, along with the Brahma Sutras and the Bhagavad Gita, are known as the Prasthanatrayi. They show the path to liberation.

The Upanishads are like beautiful flowers on the tree of the Vedas. They present the highest philosophical ideas. Some Upanishads are written in the form of dialogues between teacher and disciple, discussions, or teachings, conveying knowledge in a personal and spiritual manner.

About the Author

Dr. T. R. Dattatri is a scholar who has a deep interest in the study of the Vedas, Upanishads, and Indian spiritual philosophy. He pursued his education in the field of Ayurveda and obtained B.S.A.M. and M.D. (AY) degrees. He served as a professor at the Government Ayurveda Medical College, Mysore, and has retired from service.

His primary area of interest is studying the profound philosophical concepts of Vedanta, the Upanishads, and Indian culture, and presenting them in a simple and accessible manner to people. While studying the mantras of the Mahanarayana Upanishad, he developed an interest in understanding their deeper philosophical meaning. He began collecting notes on the subject and later compiled them into a complete explanatory work.

The author received guidance from several teachers, including his Vedic teachers such as Sri K. V. Subrahmanya of Turuvekere, Sri Krishnamurthy of Addagadde in Koppa (Chikkamagaluru district), Sri C. V. S. Jois, Dr. Shankara Narayana Jois, and Sri Subrahmanya Sharma of Mysore.

This work has been created with the aim of introducing readers to the importance of the Indian Vedic tradition. By explaining the deep philosophical ideas of the Upanishads in a simple way, this book serves as a guide for students, researchers, and spiritual seekers.
