LIYONGO's NAVEL is an Epic in verse form told in East African English – it is about early Swahili cosmology of the East African coast narrated as "songs" based on stories of creation and legends of the Swahili national hero Fumo Liyongo of Shanga, the City of Pearls, on the northern coast of Kenya. Some parts of this Epic are renditions in English of the author's original poems in written in Swahili and published elsewhere.
Dr Abdulaziz Y. Lodhi (b. 1945, Zanzibar), is Professor Emeritus of Swahili (with Bantu Linguistics and East African Area Studies) at the Department of Linguistics and Philology, Uppsala University, Sweden. He is also Guest Professor, School of Languages, State University of Zanzibar (SUZA, since 2012). During Oct. 2013 – Sept. 2017, he was a Member of the International Scientific Committee (ISC) of the Slave Route Project: Resistance, Liberty and Heritage (History and Memory for Dialogue), UNESCO, Paris. Dr Lodhi was Distinguished Visiting Professor during the Academic Year 2014 - 2015, at the Centre for Arabic and African Studies (CAAS), School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies (SLL&CS), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, India. He has published extensively on Swahilistics and Zanzibar affairs since 1963.
