Ashtadhyayi Sutra Nos for all 10 Tenses and Moods. A Workbook for Self Practice.
Most of us are familiar with the Dhatupatha of Panini. We are also aware of the Ashtadhyayi of Panini. And we know the rules for conjugation of verbs. This book gives the Derivation of Verbs from the Dhatus. Each dhatu is processed using the rules of Sanskrit Grammar to give the final verb in the present tense for each of the 1943 dhatus.
Construction of Verbs by Conjugation using Roots from the Dhatupatha is one of the most complex and involved processes in Sanskrit Grammar. It has been coded by the great grammarian Panini in a beautifully amazing way through the core texts, viz. The Dathupatha of Panini, The Ashtadhyayi of Panini and The Maheswar Sutras.
This book hopes to lay the coding methodology threadbare in a lucid manner for avid learners of the language, including Sanskrit scholars and Vyakarana pundits. Key concepts of Grammar that are processed during Verb formation have been highlighted and Roots have been classified accordingly. The words DHATU and ROOT mean the same. A Verb is a finished word that can be used in a sentence.
A Verb in Sanskrit has a construction mechanism. It involves
-taking a Root from the Dhatupatha, and
-adding an Affix to it from the Ashtadhyayi
A Root is a finite sound element that has meaning related to action. An Affix is a finite sound element that has meaning related to the Tenses and Moods. So to construct a Verb, a simple equation is:
Root + Affix = Verb. e.g. भू + तिप् = भवति । He is. She is. It exists.-
