Description

This Kirati Rai Sabdha Sangraha is more than a simple collection of words—it is a heartfelt effort to preserve the living language, heritage, and spirit of the Kirati Rai community.
For years, the author journeyed from village to village, meeting elders and language keepers, carefully gathering native words, meanings, and expressions that might otherwise have been forgotten. With dedication and love for his culture, he, along with his small team, worked tirelessly to bring together these linguistic treasures into one comprehensive collection.
The primary aim of this work is not only to record the Kirati Rai language but also to inspire future generations to speak, study, and safeguard it. In a rapidly modernizing world, this dictionary stands as a symbol of cultural pride, resilience, and hope—a reminder that language is the soul of a people.
May this book serve as a bridge between the past and the future, keeping alive the voice of our ancestors for generations to come.

Note to Readers:
The Kirati Rai community has many branches and dialects. This book is based primarily on the Bantawa Rai language. Although Bantawa itself has several dialects, our team has carefully considered these variations and worked hard to compile this book so it can be a useful reference for all Kirati Rai people.
Bantawa has also been officially recognized or has received acceptance (manyata), making this book a valuable and authentic resource for learners and researchers alike.

About the Authors

Late B. B. Rai — The Respected “Bada”

When we say “Bada,” everyone immediately recognizes him — an elderly man known and respected by all.
By nature, he would flare up quickly but calm down just as swiftly. Like a military officer, he would strictly discipline the young men, yet he looked upon everyone with equal regard. He was pure and kind-hearted, holding neither malice nor sin in his heart.

Born in Balsan, Kurseong, and having made Mirik his field of work, the late B. B. Rai was truly a blessing for all of us Rai people of Mirik. He constantly emphasized that all Rai and Kirat people must remain united — mentally, physically, and even economically. Indeed, he was the only person who continuously devoted himself toward this cause.

As a result of his tireless efforts, the Kirati Khambu Rai Cultural Organization (Ki. Kha. Rai. Sa. San.) was established in India, which was registered under number 5/80438, and he himself assumed the role of its first president and founding chairperson.

“Bada” used to say:

“I have traveled to many parts of the world, and everywhere, among all peoples, there exists a strong sense of ethnic unity. Because of that unity, they have progressed in every field. But when will such wisdom dawn upon us, the Rai people?”

Indeed, his words hold truth.
Although we Rai people are numerically large in this region, we still remain behind in almost every sector.

We see even animals and birds moving in harmony within their own species, yet we human beings — considered the most intelligent of all — have failed to understand the true meaning of our own ethnic unity. Why is that so? I believe this is largely due to our lack of education.

Therefore, it is our great responsibility as parents to advance our children in the field of education. We must teach them well that education is the only means through which one can achieve one’s desires — whether they concern rights, well-being, or personal health. Our children, and we ourselves as parents, must cultivate the habit of reading more books; this is absolutely essential.

Where there is will, there is a way.
Once a person truly desires something, no obstacle can stop them — this saying was exemplified perfectly by Bada.

We often hear that soldiers are stubborn and strong-willed — and indeed, B. B. Rai used that same determination in the right way. Because of that, this very work, the “Kirat Rai Word Collection,” could be completed.

Even at his old age, he worked tirelessly for the advancement, preservation, and unity of the Rai community — and thus, his efforts have borne meaningful fruit.

In conclusion, I would like to say that his tireless enthusiasm and hard work at such an age are truly admirable and exemplary.
May he always remain in good health and continue to be our guiding light.
