Gulmohar Dreams is an epistolary novel that explores the spiritual journey of a young writer as she moves through unexpected personal changes that compel her to redefine the meaning of her life. Faced with the gut-wrenching changes, Kamia Mirchandani, or Mia as she is often called, goes through a process of analysis and healing, trying to make sense of it all, in the end to come out stronger, healed, and sorted. In an idyllic setting of a writer's retreat over a month's stay, the protagonist explores in depth her fears, her feelings, and her failures, in the end to successfully transmute pain into power, via a series of letters to the Universe. The story ends with Mia happy to be by herself, living with unconditional self-love, eagerly looking forward to living the life of her dreams.
This is a novel set in contemporary times, dealing with contemporary realities, but timeless truths. It captures the coming-of-age moments and the journey of self-discovery in the life of a young woman, and touches upon various facets of modern life, including the strife between the old and the new, and the heart and the mind. It catalogs her first attempts at living her soul purpose of being a writer, and bears witness to her unfolding concerns about environmental issues as she writes her very first book.
Lively, lyrical, and never pretentious, Gulmohar Dreams by Dharshana Bajaj is a charming and whimsical character study of a wonderfully artsy girl. The story centres on Kamia, who keeps a diary in which she reflects on her life. Her marriage to Palash is on the verge of dissolution, and it ultimately ends in divorce. She is, as she mentioned on the first page of the book, deeply, hopelessly in love—not with any of the men but with the universe, nature, and the world. Kamia is, in essence, passionately in love with life, and what kept me turning the pages was her absolute and insightful connection with the universe that she cherishes.
A life changing book not only touched my heart but also inspired me to take charge of my life.
I read Dharshana Bajaj’s debut non-fiction book “Gaia’s Own” and absolutely adored it. So, when I heard about her latest fiction novel, I jumped at the chance to read it! And I am so glad I did too.
This whimsical book not only touched my heart but also inspired me to take charge of my life. So, a book that not only showed me the dark side of humanity but also showed the bright future we can achieve if only we are more empathetic towards others and our environment.
Though a fiction novel, this book is more about non-fictional life’s lessons, real life case studies of people who rose above their circumstances, and a motivating lesson that inspires readers to live their lives free and happy!
So, a powerful book that is one to savour, I am so glad I took time to read it. And know that I will be revisiting it again and again whenever I want a dose of determination and inspiration.
