Description

Landscaping Expertise for India is a comprehensive, practice-driven guide to landscape design, plant selection, and sustainable green development suited specifically to Indian conditions.

Unlike generic gardening books that borrow heavily from Western models, this work is rooted in India’s diverse climates, soils, cultures, and construction realities. Drawing from over three decades of hands-on professional experience, the author presents landscaping not merely as decoration, but as a discipline that integrates ecology, climate science, engineering, culture, and long-term maintenance.

The book covers the complete spectrum of landscaping in India, including landscape heritage, design principles, climatic zones, trees, palms, shrubs, lawns, hardscaping, water features, lighting, residential gardens, institutional and corporate campuses, public parks, resorts, sacred landscapes, rooftop gardens, and future-ready sustainable practices. Special emphasis is placed on palms, cycads, and structural planting—areas where Indian landscaping has evolved rapidly but often without adequate technical guidance.

A unique strength of this book lies in its focus on real-world Indian challenges. Topics such as landscaping over basement parking, ready landscaping with grown trees and palms, water-smart design, organic landscaping, and biodiversity integration are explained with clarity and field-tested insight. Rather than theory alone, the chapters reflect solutions proven across residential projects, large campuses, resorts, public spaces, and institutional developments across India.

The author also bridges traditional Indian wisdom—such as sacred groves, temple landscapes, water conservation practices, and culturally significant plants—with modern global landscaping techniques. This balanced approach ensures that landscapes are not only visually appealing but also resilient, economical, climate-appropriate, and culturally rooted.

Written in clear, practical language, Landscaping Expertise for India serves as a reference as well as a guidebook. It is intended for landscape architects, gardeners, builders, developers, municipal planners, students, nursery owners, and serious garden enthusiasts who seek reliable, India-specific knowledge rather than borrowed templates.

This book is not about trends. It is about creating landscapes that survive, mature, and serve people and nature over decades. In a rapidly urbanising country facing climate stress and shrinking green spaces, it offers a grounded, responsible, and forward-looking approach to landscaping in India.

About the Author

Dinesh Chandra Rawat is an environmental educator, professional landscaper, author, and one of India’s pioneering practitioners of climate-appropriate and palm-based landscape design.

With over thirty-five years of continuous field experience, he has designed, executed, and studied landscapes across India and in more than sixty countries. His work spans residential gardens, institutional campuses, corporate parks, resorts, public spaces, sacred landscapes, and large-scale urban developments. Unlike purely academic approaches, his expertise is grounded in on-site practice, plant survival, soil behavior, construction constraints, and long-term maintenance realities.

He is the founder of Green Mall, India’s pioneering integrated centre for gardening, palms, cycads, landscaping materials, and environmental education. Conceived as both a living demonstration ground and a training hub, Green Mall introduced hundreds of plant species—especially palms—into Indian landscaping and played a key role in the emergence of ready landscaping practices in the country.

Dinesh Chandra Rawat is also the founder of Prakriti Bandhu, a non-profit environmental and cultural trust dedicated to ecological awareness, sustainable living, and civilizational education. Through workshops, field demonstrations, public lectures, and publications, he has consistently worked to connect environmental practice with cultural responsibility.

A recognised authority on palms and tropical landscape plants, he has studied global nursery and landscaping systems in the United States, Australia, Thailand, and other countries, adapting international techniques to Indian soil depths, climate zones, and construction conditions. His contributions have been particularly significant in the field of landscaping over basements, where palms emerged as structural solutions rather than ornamental choices.

As an author, his writings combine technical clarity with cultural context. He does not write from institutional alignment or commercial motivation, but as an independent practitioner committed to knowledge sharing and long-term ecological thinking. His books aim to equip readers with practical understanding rather than idealised imagery.

Landscaping Expertise for India represents the culmination of decades of professional work, experimentation, global learning, and on-ground implementation. Through this book, Dinesh Chandra Rawat seeks to contribute to a more responsible, resilient, and distinctly Indian approach to landscaping—one that respects nature, climate, culture, and future generations.
