Description

In an age defined by climate uncertainty, environmental degradation, and ecological imbalance, the role of education in shaping sustainable futures has never been more critical. Environmental Education in Schools: Engaging the Next Generation in Climate Action emerges as a timely and essential response to the pressing need for empowering young learners with the knowledge, values, and skills necessary to become proactive stewards of the planet. This book is a collaborative effort by educators, researchers, and environmental advocates who recognize the school as a powerful platform for fostering awareness, behavioral change, and community engagement. It presents a comprehensive exploration of environmental education (EE) through a multidisciplinary lens, integrating pedagogical theory with innovative practice. The chapters cover a wide range of themes—from historical perspectives of EE and curriculum integration to biodiversity conservation, pollution awareness, climate adaptation, energy literacy, and student-led sustainability initiatives. A unique strength of this book lies in its holistic approach. Rather than isolating environmental issues as standalone topics, the contributors emphasize embedding EE across all subjects and grade levels. They advocate for experiential and project-based learning, service learning, outdoor education, and the use of technology to deepen understanding and promote action. Real-world case studies and classroom-tested strategies illustrate how environmental education can be effectively implemented in both rural and urban school settings. Recognizing that today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders, this volume emphasizes youth engagement, leadership development, and collaboration with local communities. It also addresses psychological aspects of environmental behavior, encouraging educators to foster empathy, resilience, and a sense of responsibility in children and adolescents. This book is intended not only for teachers and school administrators, but also for policymakers, curriculum developers, environmental NGOs, and researchers who are committed to building a greener, more equitable future. It is our hope that this volume will serve as both a guide and an inspiration for integrating meaningful environmental education into the fabric of school life.
