Description
Insulin is a natural hormone produced by the pancreas that controls blood sugar level. It’s like a key that allows glucose to enter cells throughout the body. Insulin is a vital part of metabolism. Without it, the body would cease to function. When you eat, pancreas releases insulin to help the body make energy out of glucose, a type of sugar found in carbohydrates. It also helps to store energy. In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas is no longer able to produce insulin. In type 2 diabetes, the pancreas initially produces insulin, but the cells of the body are unable to make good use of the insulin, this is called insulin resistance. The mature insulin molecule is composed of two polypeptide chains designated as A and B that are joined by two pairs of disulphide bonds with an additional intramolecular disulphide bond in the A chain. However, the two chains of the insulin molecule are not synthesized as separate polypeptide chains but rather are generated by specific proteolytic processing of a larger precursor, proinsulin.
