Modern drug delivery system calls for specific and precise formulation for
specific drug. Drugs show variable behavior depending on the physico-chemical
properties. Therefore, it is a challenging effort to have an efficient design in
formulations to increase the performance of drug in biological system, since,
the efficacy of drug depends also on the delivery system, hence, a suitable
formulation will show better efficiency of the same drug presented in a
different formulation.
For centuries man has made effective use of such materials from
nature in the field of pharmacy. Due to the limitation of synthetic materials,
today, the pharmaceutical and other communities are increasingly interested in
natural drugs and excipients. Natural materials have advantages over synthetic
materials because they are non toxic, less expensive and easily available.
Furthermore, they can be modified to obtain customized materials for drug
delivery systems allowing them to compete with the synthetic products that are
commercially available.
