About the Book: Ekadashi is the eleventh lunar day vis-à-vis the waxing and waning cycle of the Hindu Calendar. Ekadashi day is ideal for the worship of Lord Vishnu, esp. for the Vaishnavites. Importantly, Ekadashi is the best day for fasting in Sanatana Dharma. The main purpose of fasting is to cleanse the body and mind in order to move towards spiritual advancement. Sanyasis do fasting for two days: the second day is for the purpose of attaining Moksha or salvation. However, pregnant women and disabled persons should not do fasting. The bhaktas chant “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaye” during Ekadashi fasting. It is also auspicious to chant Vishnu Sahasranama on this day. Pradosham in Hinduism takes place on the 13th day of the lunar cycle (trayodashi thithi} and is of importance to the Shaivites. The evening of Trayodashi (4-30 to 6 p.m.) is called Pradosham. It occurs once in 15 days and is ideal for praying Lord Shiva, who offers boons and blessings; because, both Lord Shiva and Devi Parvathi are most merciful on Pradosham days. Such prayers will lead the devotees to Moksha. On Pradosham day, people observe fasting and chant Om Nama Shivaya. They also recite Rudram-Chamakkam Mantras and sing Devaram songs. The Pradosham fast is observed from sunrise to sunset. This book has described the religious traditions, rituals and protocols relating to Ekadashi and Pradosham and has narrated a few stories associated with Ekadashi and Pradosham.
