Description
This foundational chapter establishes the theoretical bedrock of game theory, introducing
readers to the mathematical framework that governs strategic interactions among rational
decision-makers. Beginning with historical perspectives and core definitions, we progress
through the fundamental concepts of players, strategies, and payoffs that form the structural
basis of all game-theoretic analysis. The chapter examines critical assumptions underlying
game theory, particularly rationality and common knowledge, while exploring the diverse
classification systems that categorize games according to their structural and temporal
characteristics. We conclude with mathematical representations essential for formal analysis,
including payoff matrices, extensive-form representations, and utility functions. This
comprehensive treatment provides the analytical foundation necessary for understanding
advanced game-theoretic concepts and their applications across economics, political science,
biology, and computer science.
