Sericulture, or silk farming, is the specialized branch of agriculture that deals with the commercial rearing of silkworms primarily the species Bombyx mori for the production of silk. It is often described as a “bridge industry” because it exists at the intersection of two distinct worlds: Moriculture (the agricultural cultivation of host plants) and Reeling (the industrial process of transforming cocoons into textile fibers). Unlike traditional livestock farming, sericulture is a high-value, low-volume enterprise. It requires meticulous attention to biological detail, as the silkworm is one of the most domesticated and delicate insects on the planet. The end product, silk, remains the “Queen of Textiles” due to its natural sheen, high protein structure, and remarkable tensile strength.
