Modernity and Tradition in Five Indian Tongues examines the dynamic dialogue
between inherited cultural frameworks and emerging modern sensibilities in five
major Indian literary traditions—Hindi, Sindhi, Telugu, Punjabi, and Tamil. The
book situates literary texts within their socio-historical contexts to explore how
Indian modernity evolved not as a rejection of tradition, but as a layered
negotiation with it. Through close readings of works by Suryakant Tripathi
‘Nirala’, Popati Hiranandani, Sri Sri, Amrita Pritam, and Subramania
Bharati, the study highlights themes of labour, gender, nationalism, creativity,
class consciousness, and selfhood.
