In recent history, rarely has any country witnessed the scale of adult literacy movement comparable to India. 596 out of 600 districts in country have been brought under the fold of NLM’s adult education programmes, through the TLCs, PLPs and CEPs. In pursuit of this campaign to create a learning continuum and a literacy society, although the approach and the strategy adopted was common, viz. mass campaign mode, the method and processes adopted differed depending on the educational, socio-economic and cultural context of each district and state.
The literacy movement in Jind (Haryana), by all accounts, appears to be legendary case of using literacy as an instrument of tacking the multifarious barriers to literacy and bringing about gender and social equality, besides the primary objective of removing illiteracy and using the literacy skill as a spring board to bring about improvement in the condition of learners. This book collect all these memorable experiences
