Physiology is the study of the myriad of mechanisms operating in the human body. It is vital to gain a rationale view of pathological processes and also, to comprehend the mechanism of action of drugs in pharmacology. Thus, physiology is the link between the basic sciences and clinical medicine.
Specific Learning Objectives (SLOs) specify the learning elements in which the student should be ‘competent’ at the end of any teaching-learning session. The National Medical Commission (NMC) has rolled out the new Competency Driven Curriculum from the academic year 2019. The competencies in each subject define the scope (breadth) of the particular subject. Yet, students frequently ask, “How much should they read in each topic?’ This book is a modest endeavour to answer this million dollar question. This book aims to define the ‘depth’ of the Medical Physiology curriculum. The Specific Learning Objectives laid down in the book cater to the ‘must know’ learning elements in each topic. The gold standard textbooks of Physiology viz. Guyton and Hall’s Textbook of Medical Physiology, 2nd South Asia Edition, and Ganong’s Review of Medical Physiology, 26th Edition, have been used as guideposts for framing these specific learning objectives.
Faculty may refer to these Specific Learning Objectives (SLOs) before the preparation of their teaching-learning sessions. I hope this book will serve as a handy guide for them. Students of Phase I MBBS will find it a handy tool in their sojourns to master the subject of Physiology.
An essential companion to the new Competency Driven Curriculum in Physiology
