This book Haematology for Paramedical students is divided into nine units. Unit 1 describes the basic and specialized haematological tests which are carried out in a laboratory and the blood preparations required for haematological tests and the instruments needed to perform these tests. It also explains the procedures involved in cleaning, disinfecting and sterilizing the instruments. Eventually, it discusses the ways to carry out waste disposal and lists the safety measures which should be adhered to by laboratory personnel. Unit 2 describes the composition and function of blood. Unit 3 discusses the processes involved in the formation of blood like erythropoiesis, leucopoiesis and thrombopoiesis.
Unit 4 discusses the different types of anticoagulants, their uses, their mode of action and their advantages and disadvantages. Unit 5 discusses the methods for the collection and preservation of blood. It describes the different methods of collection, preservation, and the changes that can take place in stored blood. In unit 6, you will learn about the findings of morphologic abnormalities of red cells detected during the microscopic examination of stained blood films. Unit 7 discusses the enumeration of blood cells and unit 8 describes the details of a blood film or a peripheral blood smear. Finally, in unit 9, you will learn about the different types of Romanowsky stains, the preparation of various stains and its various colour responses. You will also learn about the different factors that affect staining and the various methods of staining.
The book has been written in the easy to understand mode wherein each unit begins with an Introduction to the topic, followed by an outline of the Unit Objectives. The detailed content is then presented in a simple and organized manner, interspersed with ‘Check Your Progress’ questions to test the student’s understanding of the topics covered. A Summary along with a list of Key Terms and a set of Questions and Exercises is provided at the end of each unit for effective recapitulation.
