This book, "From Awareness to Empowerment: Consumer Protection Movement in India," traces the trajectory of India’s consumer movement—from its early challenges to its current legal framework—highlighting the enduring struggle for consumer rights and justice. It examines the vulnerabilities faced by Indian consumers, especially those impacted by poverty, illiteracy, and systemic exploitation through unfair practices such as adulteration, black marketing, and deceptive advertising. The work advocates for a robust and inclusive approach to consumer protection—one that incorporates awareness, education, and empowerment, not merely grievance redressal.
This study illustrates the importance of evolving government initiatives and legislative frameworks in shaping the consumer movement. It examines the crucial role of the Consumer Protection Act, 1986, while also recognizing its limitations in responding to modern market dynamics, especially the rise of e-commerce and digital transactions. The Consumer Protection Act, 2019 marks a transformative shift by incorporating provisions for online commerce, introducing the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), strengthening product liability rules, and enhancing penalties for violations. This work necessitates a comprehensive reassessment of India's consumer protection regime in light of new challenges and expectations
The book offers a deep analytical exploration of the 2019 Act, evaluating the effectiveness of implemented measures, the role of regulatory bodies, legal provisions, and the level of consumer awareness in the country. It includes a focused case study on consumer
consciousness in Aligarh, a review of the 2001 amendment bill, and practical recommendations to enhance legal and institutional efficacy under the current legal environment.
Structured across eight chapters, the study covers research context, theoretical underpinnings, historical evolution, the role of voluntary organizations, legislative development, field survey findings, and reform suggestions. It seeks to contribute both academically and practically to the discourse on consumer protection in India.
