Feminism has been a fast emerging and widely talked about concept. Literature has always been a handy tool in exploring gender differences. Gender is basically a construct of society designed to facilitate the smooth functioning of society for validating the advantage of man. As Simon de Beauvoir has emphatically stated ‘one is not born, but rather becomes a women. It is civilization as a whole that produces this creature which is described as feminine’. The traditional deification of womanhood conceals a collective attempt to exploit woman. The subjugation of woman in a patriarchal setup depends largely upon, and also varies according to caste, class and race. Since the woman is economically dependent on man her psyche moves towards subservience. As time changed woman became economically independent but the tendency of subordination in a male dominated society continued without apparent changes.
In this present work I have exposed and highlighted the oppression and exploitation of women through the works of Tehmina Durrani, Taslima and Shashi Deshpande and Anita Desai who have delved or probed deeply into the psychology of women.
I am highly grateful to all my family members and my friends for their profound cooperation, unflinching support, guidance encouragement and broadening my outlook in my work.
