Hatha Yoga essentially deals with Yogabhyas (the practice of Yoga) and hence is also called as the‘Raja Yoga’ or the ‘Kundalini Yoga’ (spiritual aspect of Yoga).
This book essentially deals with the physical and health aspects of Yoga while encouraging to have a relaxed mind for overall benefits.
It contains plenty of sketches and photographs of Asanas to illustrate critical correlation between the postures and advantages to be derived from them. There is a special mention of a couple of rarely discussed Mudras like the Shanmukhi Mudra and Pran Mudra.
The Shanmukhi Mudra can be practiced at your work station for 20 to 30 seconds to relieve boredom and reduce stress quickly. This is a boon to almost everybody except those with a weak heart.
The book also contains a 'Desirable Activity Chart for Positive Health' and a Chart suggesting the chronological order of Asanas to be practiced. Slight variations in Asanas in day to day practice helps cover many Asanas in a week.
WHO defines health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely absence of a disease or infirmity. Exercises in general and Yoga in particular take care of both, the mental and physical well being it envisages fusion of Mind and Body for deriving the optimum benefits.
Extended working hours and the stress of performance take a heavy toll of our health. There is hardly an individual who has not suffered from backache in life. Modern lifestyle which leads to lack of function of the anti-gravity muscles (in situation without gravity) leads to their deterioration, atrophy (Disuse atrophy) with the resultant loss of muscle strength and muscle tone, leading to ‘Gravity Related Medical Conditions’ like Low back pain, Osteoarthritis, Osteoporosis, Postural Neck and Shoulder pain and Pelvic Floor problems such as stress incontinence.
It also helps the readers to understand benefits of strengthening muscles and advises the younger ones on the utility of combining Yoga with other exercises. Further it stresses the need to keep a proper gap between different types of exercises and even between food and exercises based on scientific ground.
The analogy of ‘Hatha’ is very interesting. ‘Ha’ means the Sun and ‘Tha’ means the Moon. Just like the coordination between the Sun and the Moon is important for the wellbeing of the mother earth, the Body and the Mind coordination are important for our well being.
The aim thus is to have a healthy body and a healthy mind for better living.
