Description

The present book comprises the translation of two cantos of the MAHABHARATA, the VIRATA and the UDYOGA from Telugu into English. It has been my privilege
and pleasur to read this translation. It is no simple, mechanical trans lation, it has all the emotional imagination of rich poetry With its facile, simple style it reads like an original composition. Its poetic content fascinates the reader. The dramatic quality of VIRATAPARVA as given by Tikkana is wholeheartedly reproduced in chaste English and the English version recaptures the exquisite sweetness of
Tikkana's Telugu poetry. UDYOGAPARVA is like thePandemonium session of Milton's PARADISE LOST, BOOK II and late Sri Subbaramaiah conversant with the epic grandeur of PARADISE LOST has enriched the Telugu version with all the flamboyant, colourful, rhetorical speeches of various heroes like Dharmaja, Duryodhana and Lord Krishna, some advocating war and some others denouncing peace as cowardice, typical of the speeches in PARDISE LOST, BOOK II.

About the Author

Prof. Gurram V. Subbaramayya who headed the English Department in Nellore V.R. College and who retired as Principal of Pamulapati Butchi Naidu College at Nidubrolu was fascinated by the Andhra Mahabharatam and desired to render it into English. He adopted the blank verse form, enriched by great masters of English liierature. Blank verse form is powerful and effective and Prof. Subbaramayya did
achieve that excellence in his English translation. For years he was on this sacred task and utilized all his leisure hours for it. He took it up as a mission and with full devotion and dedication he almost completed the work, just before his demise.
Late Sri G. V. Subbaramaiah, an eminent scholar in English and Telugu took upon himself the stupendous task of translating the ANDHRA MAHABHARATAM into
English. He taught in V R. College, Nellore for a number of years and later became the Principal of P. B. N. college, Nidubrolu. In his life time his one mission had been the critical appreciation of the epic, and its translation engaged his attention during the last few years of his life.
