Carmilla, first published in 1872, is a classic Gothic horror novella by Irish writer J. Sheridan Le Fanu and one of the earliest vampire stories in English literature. Set in a secluded castle in the forests of nineteenth-century Austria, the story follows Laura, a young woman whose quiet life is disrupted when a mysterious and enchanting stranger named Carmilla arrives after a carriage accident. As their friendship grows, strange events begin to occur, including a mysterious illness spreading among local villagers and Laura experiencing disturbing dreams and unexplained weakness. Carmilla’s secretive behavior and haunting presence gradually reveal a dark and terrifying truth. Filled with suspense, atmosphere, and supernatural mystery, Carmilla is a landmark of Gothic fiction that influenced later vampire literature, including Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and continues to captivate readers with its eerie and timeless tale.
