This book is structured into seven Chapters. The first Chapter introduces the readers into the world of Hindustani taals (parichaya). The second Chapter establishes the Tala terminologies and the Tabla/ Pakhawaj repertoire used in the book (paribhaasha and rangapatala). The description of the taal thekas is covered in Chapters 3 to 7. Chapter 3 gives the thekas of the Big ten taals - the prime movers of the Hindustani musical system. Chapter 4 presents the popular, current, & sparsely used taal thekas (loka priya, prachalita & alpa prachalita). Chapter 5 describes the Archaic taal thekas (aprachalita) developed in the Hindustani musical system (Hindustani sangita sampradaya) over the past 3-4 centuries. To facilitate ease of navigation of the taal thekas, the Chapter 5 is divided into four sub-chapters as follows: Chapter 5-1 encompasses taal thekas of avartanas (metrical macro-cycle sizes) of 2-11 matras, Chapter 5-2 covers macro-cycles of 12-15 matras, Chapter 5-3 of 16-20 matras and Chapter 5-4 covers 21-64 matras. Chapter 6 comprises of taal thekas of Hindustani associated musical systems coming under Kashmiri, Punjabi (Sikh Gurmat), Rajasthani, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarati, Bengali, Odissi. Chapter 7- Assamese and Manipuri, embraces the taal thekas of Assamese and Manipuri musical systems. The book consists of a glossary (shabdakosha) of vernacular terms (desheeya bhaashe/ shabdaavalee) used in the texts. The list of the taals- alphabetical and numerical is added. A comprehensive reference of the works cited and used in this book is included. In all, around 825 taal thekas of the Hindustani classical system and 225 taal thekas of the Hindustani associated systems are contained in this book.
