Ramadan is the holy month in the Islamic Hijri calendar. During this month, Muslims observe fasting from early morning till sunset, which is called "Roja" or "Siam." Siam, or fasting, is one of the five pillars of Islam. The five pillars are Iman, Salat, Roja, Hajj, & Zakat.
The practice of fasting is found in many cultures and belief systems. However, Islamic fasting differs from the others. Some salient features are the following: the mandatory fasting must be observed during the month of Ramadan; the fasting starts from the moment of Subhey Sadik till sunset of the other day; the fifth daily prayer (Isha) is followed by a separate prayer called Tarabih salat; the last ten or nine days are observed with another different vow called I'tikaf, where a devotee needs to stay inside the mosque; the month of Ramadan is the covenant of a holy night called Shab-e-Qadr or Lailat-al-Qadr; the devotees need to pay Fitrah before the Eid prayer; and finally, the month is ended by celebrating the Eit al Fitr on the first day of the month of Shawal as per the Islamic Hijri calendar.
