Every era of human history has seen the emergence of epidemic illnesses, and finding a cure has
always required time. Biofilm-forming causative bacteria multiply and have a role in the
development of several infectious illnesses. Serious lung infections are the result of a process that
begins with respiratory illnesses and is caused by bacteria and viruses that grow and proliferate.
The biofilms exhibit greater resistance to current antimicrobial treatments and are challenging to
eradicate. Finding and creating prospective resources for use in therapy is necessary. The quest for
new biological agents derived from plants is becoming more and more popular because of their
great quantity, accessibility, which lowers the cost of discovery, and lack of harmful side effects.
Certain plants contain saponins, which have antibacterial properties and can be used as an
alternative to antibiotics. The effectiveness of saponin-containing plants with antibacterial
qualities as antibiofilm agents against various illnesses was the main topic of this review. In order
to do this, keywords were searched using the academic databases of Web of Science, Scopus, and
Google, and a list of relevant works was created. There is a list of about twenty-five plant species
from eighteen families that are historically used to treat respiratory ailments. The majority of these
taxa are members of the Asparagaceae, Fabaceae, Asteraceae, and Apiaceae families, respectively.
Antibacterial, antifungal, antitussive, and anti-inflammatory properties are present in the majority
of these taxa. This study specifically compiles plants having antibiofilm action, which might be
useful against a wide range of bacteria. These plants' phytochemicals, particularly their saponins,
have the ability to prevent or cure bacterial infections in the upper respiratory tract.
