Description

All eating disorders (EDs) are serious mental illnesses with significant, life-threatening medical and psychiatric morbidity and mortality, regardless of an individual’s weight. Patients with EDs have the highest mortality rates of any psychiatric disorder. The risk of premature death is 6-12 times higher in women with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) as compared to the general population, adjusting for age. Early recognition and timely intervention, based on a developmentally appropriate, evidence-based, multidisciplinary team approach (medical, psychological & nutritional) is the ideal standard of care, whenever possible.

The only note I would like to add to anyone reading this would be that you are not alone in this and remember its ok to talk.

About the Author

Sindhu Nandakumar is a consulting psychotherapist with a Masters in Counselling psychology.
She is the founder of Mindspa, an online counselling portal. She is a certified practitioner of EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), NLP ( Neuro- linguistic programming), Hypnotherapy, REBT (Rational Emotive Behavioral therapy), CBT(Cognitive Behavioral therapy), Forensic Healing, Addiction/ rehabilitation counselling and Child counselling. She is a member of the board of directors of IACP (International Association of counselling psychologists), an organization working for the welfare of counselling psychologists.
She perceives counselling as a great source of relief and comfort to help others through their tough times. She has witnessed her clients emerge calmer, more confident, more resilient and more peaceful, because having someone there who understands, listens and does not judge is very powerful and can result in change on a huge scale.
Her journey into the world of psychology started with the realization that not even 2 % of the total population who needs help comes up to a psychologist for help. This was basically due to the fear of self-exposure or what others might think if they are found visiting a psychologist.
This led to the launch of Svaastika, an online counselling site where anyone can seek mental help without revealing their identity. The website soon expanded into a NGO with chapters worldwide initiating the concept of well-being in not just mental health but also in varied spectra of life.
The panel of professionals that formed the advisory board in Svaastika urged her to pursue further studies into allied fields of mental health like Psychotherapies, energy healing and hypnosis finally designating her as a Psychotherapist.
Along with her career in psychological counselling she pursues her interest in creative writing, with a current record of more than 17 publications in English, Hindi & Malayalam.
Her written genre of publications includes novels, poems, short stories, business booklets and psychological handbooks.
To promote budding authors she established an online publishing house known as the Pens & Scrolls. Within a span of three years the publishing house made its mark as a global publishing house with the publication of four online magazines named Learn-Easy, E-Mag, and Live-long & Yaatri.
Along with Mindspa (an online counselling portal), Svaastika (an NGO initiating the concept of well-being) and Pens & Scrolls, she is also the founder of many other organizations like, B-zolutions (a multinational business consultancy) and Vlog-HD (an online media channel) .
