Even though traditional Indian culture promotes respect for senior citizens, their abuse has become a serious problem in India. In a study by AgeWell Foundation, it was reported that about 71% of the senior citizens have been harassed or humiliated by their own family members and relatives. Abuse may happen due to property or other reasons. Abuse can be physical, mental, emotional or other kinds such as denying food and medicines. In many cases, the senior citizens are dependent on, or living in close proximity of those who abuse them. A study by HelpAge India found that only 24% of the abused senior citizens were willing to report the abuse.
In this book, we look at some aspects of the abuse of senior citizens and some remedies, legal or otherwise, that senior citizens and their well wishers can use to fight such abuse. We also look at some organizations that are helping senior citizens.
