A paranormal romance? Are you crazy? Was my first reaction when I opened Jen Minkman’s novel, The Shadow of Time.
There in the introduction was one line that bowled me over…
‘Sometimes, the past has a way of catching up with you!’.
I started the book in earnest. The novel takes you to Navajo Nation and back to the Indians who were original inhabitants of America. Hannah, a school teacher, comes to spend the summer with her younger brother Ben at their home in St. Ports. There she meets Josh, Ben’s best friend and starts falling in love with Josh. There is something about him which she cannot place. Neither can she explain the irresistible force Josh has.
As she discovers love, Hannah is plagued with nightmares and supernatural incidences. It almost feels as if she is cursed. And amidst that, her relationship with Josh takes a tumble. Hannah is in absolute despair.
Till this point, I was already enthralled. Then came Jen’s master card.
Josh comes clean about having experienced his past life on a vision quest he took when he was 14 years old. Hannah realizes that their bond stretches far beyond this life.
But will their love be able to destroy demons from the past? Will they ever be able to live a normal life? Would they end up together in their next life? And what about those terrifying nightmares which look like parts of a Civil War Movie?
So many questions and what a fitting end. The highlight of this novel is definitely when Josh takes Hannah and indeed the reader on a beautiful journey across the rich heritage and history of Navajos in America and how they adapted to a cultural and territorial invasion from the ‘palefaces’ who they fought with. It was such a marvelous insight into Navajo beliefs. The Navajo people revere elements of the earth and spend their life amidst divinity and gratitude. It almost made me want to live that way, far away from the stresses of the corporate life.
Jen has a very easy way of writing and yet the impact she creates with those words is tremendous. I believe her novel would make a fine film if someone wishes to someday!! The book doesn’t fail to keep you entertained and I couldn’t put it down for even a moment.
A few of my favourite lines from the Novel:
She saw the light in his eyes was gentle and unafraid. He did no longer want to shut her out. “I was told to make peace, and to find it for myself.”
Hannah stared at him in awe. “That’s so beautiful,” she whispered.
I sing a traditional song for my brother, whose face gradually draws pale. The light in his eyes is fading and when finally reinforcements arrive from behind, he has practically lost consciousness. His spirit is already somewhere else, in a more beautiful and peaceful place.
This was amazing. The universe wasn’t as unfair and senseless as it sometimes seemed. Everything was connected. Ties between people never really disappeared. She was a part of something bigger that she would never be able to fully comprehend, and didn’t necessarily need to comprehend in order to trust in it.
All in All, The Shadow of Time is an irresistible book! You just can’t put it down

To be honest, this is my second novel to the world of paranormal.
I’ve read several novels before laying my eyes on this one, But this was the second paranormal novel I’ve ever come across. And I must say, I am NOT Disappointed. I can’t believe I left this genre obsolete till now.
What a fantastic read this novel was.
I’m deeply impressed with Jen Minkman’s story and stomped on the decision to write this review with a wide grin on my face.
This book is 400 pages and make no mistake it requires long time to swipe through the pages but I soon almost forgot my reading progress as soon as the novel started and the journey began. I checked on the dates and duration and it was a week complete that I lived in the paranormal world Jen Minkman created exceptionally well.
The story started on well, very fast paced, but the first 100~150 pages appeared to me just as some other ordinary love story. Reading first 150 pages, I didn’t expect I’ll love and enjoy this novel as much as I did after reading from cover to cover.
Then comes page 180…..200…..240….280…. And story really starts getting it’s interest and pace just like watching a new born learning to walk…
It starts of from crawling……walking…..running……bicycle……motorcycle…..4 wheels and finally Jet….
It’s certainly a very gripping story and will surely hook up a captivated audience for few days to live the paranormal world which appears very believable.
Characters:- Well, all the characters were equally given the importance and I didn’t find it difficult to remember the names of any.
Josh was my favorite character as I could relate to him personally.
I loved how Agile Josh was to thrive upon eliminating the curse.
Ben was equally supporting and caring too.
And the main character Hanna was written to appear as resilient and rebounding.
Story:-
It’s a very gripping story that will hold the readers glued to their seats.
Smooth twists to avoid any abrupt changes, which felt very profound.
Characters were delegate, and the suspense between defeat , death and triumphs at the very end were just captivating and exhilarating.
I read the book from cover to cover with few short siesta but I didn’t have to fight against contemplation getting the story to resonate with me. Nor I faced any problems with keeping the track of storyline through the week.
The story might not be as bizarre to the paranormal fans, but it’s certainly a refreshment over your regular twilight and vampire stuffs.
(Not many paranormal books have coyote in it, do they?)
Skin-walkers, Shape Shifters, Fierce Shadows, Beautiful characters yielded the book to be a fast pace and smooth read and exhilarating experience.
The book talks much about Navajo Culture and Dine Language, about which I didn’t have any prior knowledge.
Author has well researched about the Navajo Culture and the language which reflects and shines through out the novel.
At-least Now I possess handful of knowledge about Native Americans and Navajo Culture. All thanks to author for her deep research (and also thanks to myself, for picking up this novel, hehehehe)…
Though I felt the book could be much shorter, around 250 pages or perhaps 280 ish range if the first part was re-written a bit shorter.
But Anyways, It’s the first novel by author and since English is not the native language of Jen, I’ll admit she managed to strike me with her creativity and beautiful story.
Though I have few inquisitive questions in mind, but I see, that’s a personal issue.
Overall, the story was as Serene and soothe, It kept me hooked and gripped effortlessly for a week.
So Go ahead, grab your kindle and download a copy.
