As a teacher, I know that stories are a great medium to discuss social issues with children. Growing up in a multicultural environment, I was able to see that many individuals are unaware as to the reasons why Sikhs wear turbans. This was the inspiration of "Himmat's Courage". The story touches on firstly, understanding aspects of our culture including an explanation as to why Sikhs wear turbans. Secondly, it sheds light on the social issue of bullying, as many Sikhs are often bullied for wearing a turban. By highlighting these issues, I hope that young readers of the Sikh faith can feel like they have a voice and find joy in reading a book that features them as the main character.
