Part memoirs but largely fiction, the novel narrates the trials and tribulations of a Muslim boy in love with a Hindu girl, an allegory of a romantic journey beset with the resentment entrenched in an intolerant society. Up until the mid to late eighties, interfaith marriages in India, especially marriages between Hindus and Muslims, were rare and often provoked violence.
