Prachi, about to turn 11, finds herself on an unexpected trip to Dholavira, a fascinating place in Gujarat, India. Even though she wasn’t sure about exploring it at first, the surprise trip piqued her curiosity.

Dholavira is like stepping back 5,000 years in time, to a place where people from the ancient Indus Valley Civilization lived. It was discovered in 1997, along with another ancient place called Lothal, which was a very old dockyard town. Was this on the seaside at that time?

Prachi wanders around Dholavira, and with the help of her guide, Tulsibhai, and his clever Basenji dog, Dumkopf, she learns all about the ancient structures and how people used to live back then. Tulsibhai, Dumkopf and Prachi become really good friends! She even gets to live in a cool round hut called ‘bhunga’ like people of the time.

About the Author

Kanchan Deshpande has written two kinds of books.
Her main love has been writing science textbooks for junior and middle-school students. These have been activity oriented, using situated learning, and have used claims, evidence and reasoning as a means to understanding science better.
The idea is to make science real.
Alongside, she has been writing illustrated stories for her grandchildren and their friends, with these young people as the central characters.
She has been working in the field of education throughout, set up and run science and mathematics activity centres in schools, and been involved with teacher training. All in all, it has been a fulfilling life.
Life has involved a lot of travel and changes in locations because of her husband’s job. But, as she says, she is lucky that each place has been an adventure – and a memorable one at that!
