At midnight, on the birthday of Sri Krishna, Janmashtami, a young mother looks up to the deity of Her beloved Lord and prays, “Is it possible for me to feel this peace of your presence, forever my Lord? How?” As if in answer to her question, her Grand Uncle, an old Sadhu arrives at her doorstep. He advises her to surrender to the Lord, to become her little son, baby Gopal. “What does that mean?” She wonders and searches the internet, scriptures, prays and meditates, but to no avail.
On the eve of Navaratri, she decides that just as the Gopis had prayed to Mother Durga, she too would worship Her. Seek Divine Mother’s Grace for resolving this mystery of surrender and becoming baby Gopal. At that time, her super-achiever friend, Lavanya, visits her and confides about her goal of finding balance in her life. She needs to make a blueprint for it during Navaratri. Another friend, Simi, must decide by the end of Navaratri, whether to take up a job assignment in Swaziland, leaving her young children and husband behind, or drop the project and possibly get fired from her job.
The three of them, along with the entire community, celebrate Navaratri together. They search for clues to help them make decisions in their lives. Each day of Navaratri is dedicated to one form of Mother Durga, about whom they learn and worship. As they visit Divine Mother’s temple and participate in celebrations at home, other events transpire, leading to twists and turns in their lives.
The incidents in their lives, intertwined with stories from the Puranas and philosophy, carry the reader on a soul-searching journey. Traditions and spiritual practices meld with smartphones, deadlines and hectic lifestyles. Ancient stories come alive and yet can they solve our modern-day problems and dilemmas?
