Description

One of the original inhabitants, Kodavas are an intrepid tribe of mountain warriors of Kodagu. Tucked away in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, known famously as the Scotland of India, this tiny district continued to remain backward long after independence.
Gowramma was born in rural Kodagu in 1920, falling into a into a cauldron of troubles almost soon after. But she, to quote the author, was "besotted with life," and loved each day that it offered. She also loved and revered her ancestors, who shaped her life.
This book gives an insight into the life, laughter and tears of a child growing up in rural Kodagu almost a century ago.And more than a peep into her grown-up life, which includes marriage into a strange family and the struggle for freedom.

About the Author

Since her early days, the author was aware that her mother was different. She was also familiar with Gowramma's philosophy of life. "Do what you have to; the rest will take care of itself."
When she lost her husband nine years ago, Gowramma, for the first time in her life, was at loose ends. She was ageing, and had a bad heart. But she missed her elders and ancestors, their memories flooding back to her.She wished to write about their lives and hers with them. That would be her tribute to them.
That was the seed for this book. But, while some of those old facts were chronicled, many were not. After talking to several elders who still remembered, the author got into her mother's shoes and wrote, trying to reflect the innocence, gentle humour and the passion of those times.
Dr Latha Muthanna, an Internist, lives and practices in the city of Mysore. This is her first book.
