Memoirs of Rebellion: Struggles to Find Oneself Amidst Cultural Shackles, written in an autobiographical mode, is the story of an Indian village girl who struggled against her traditional family to get an education and be independent. Taken out of school and punished for refusing to get married at 12 years she enlisted the help of a convent to continue her education.
The convent, however, changed her rebellious mood to one of faith and she returns home to get married and agree to lead a conventional life. In her confined marital home, she is again seized by an uncontrollable urge to seek a larger life and she leaves home on a scholarship grant to become a student in an American university. She was attracted there by promises of the American Dream and unlimited freedom, but it was not long before she finds that freedom in America is also shackled, without a sense of meaning, and is more superficial than real.
She then decides to return home to be reoriented to her own country and its culture. With a greater understanding of life, she discovers herself by participating in wider university life and joining an international women’s organization, the Soroptimists.
Interesting book describes vividly how a person changes over time
The early years are covered with emotion and are in many ways gripping. As the years go on, hope and rebellion change somewhat to disillusionment and acceptance. The book is a good read and there is much to be learnt and understood.
