The Visit is a journey across time, memory, and imagination. In the first part of the book, Dr. Panicker revisits his childhood in India during the 1950s, growing up in a conservative Nair family surrounded by elderly relatives and traditions that stretched back generations. These personal memories unfold against the backdrop of a newly independent nation still shaping its identity after the end of British rule. The excitement of change, the disappearance of princely states, the abolition of untouchability and bonded labor, and the emergence of a new India form the historical canvas of his early life.
The narrative then follows his own path of education and discovery: from Banaras Hindu University, one of India’s oldest and most prestigious engineering institutions, to IIT Madras, and onward to the Indian Space Research Organization, where he worked as a materials engineer during the early years of India’s space program. His journey eventually led to Los Angeles, where he pursued doctoral research at the University of Southern California and began a long professional career in California.
The second part of the book takes a different turn — into the world of storytelling. Here, Dr. Panicker explores fiction for the first time, presenting a collection of stories born purely from imagination. The characters and events are entirely fictional, yet they echo universal themes of human life.
Together, these two parts form a rich tapestry — a life remembered and a storyteller discovered.
