I suffered from Schizophrenia in the year 1974-75. While I was doing my 1st year Law, my father was a tough man with Feudal background of a village in YSR District, Rayalaseema. I was timid and shy during my childhood. Because of so many reasons of my family background and my sensitive and innocent nature I became a victim in the faction hit Rayalaseema region. Henceforth, I suffered from Schizophrenia and I got treated at Manasa Neuropsychiatric hospital, Bangalore by late Dr. H.S. Subramanyam. However, it took nearly 2 decades for me to become absolutely normal. During the course of treatment I underwent shock treatment (ECT) and got recovered. However it took long time to complete my Law course in Bangalore.
After I got married in the year 1981, I struggled a lot to continue as an advocate. Finally, I become normal by the year 1992. Afterthat, I continued my medication and treatment with Dr. Dharmendra in the same hospital and in the year 2006 and 2007, I suffered a lot because of some abnormal thoughts like suspision. Dr Dharmendra treated me to come out of these wretched thoughts and I realised these thoughts are part of my illness and realised that there is treatment for such irrational thoughts also. Doctor asked me to write my experiences as a diary, this changed my life and recovered wonderfully. I wrote some books about my Autobiography in Telugu and English, which were also translated and published in Kannada and Hindi also. I just want to create awareness among all the people who are sufering from psychiatric disorders and help them to regain their valuable life back in track. It is certain that any one can become normal if they take treatment at an early stage and follow the guidelines given by the doctor and also as mentioned in my book not to discontinue medication at any cost.
Why people stigmatised Schizophrenia?
In the past and there was no proper treatment and in medication to psychiatric ailments.. As I know through my experience ,this ailment cannot be cured unless properly treated. Moreover this is a long standing disorder. The patient and the care takers must patiently waite and systematically undergo the treatment.. As this disorder is mainly attached with the thinking process and resulting in thought disorder. We know that, restricting the thoughts is not an easy thing and this thought disorder is resulting out of the chemical imbalance in the brain..To rectify the imbalance of the chemicals in the brain treatment with an experienced psychiatrist is a must. More over this illness is not properly understood by the public in general and also by the care takers ,so many myths and superstitions are attached to the sufferer and the mental issues altogether.
Aware about the reasons and causes of Schizophrenia will help the care takers in extending their care through getting awareness..
