Earlier, being competent was sufficient because opportunities were limited and competition was local.

Every skill is neutral by default. It does not inherently have a size, status, or value. On its own, a skill has no rank, no built-in importance, and no inherent ceiling. It’s just an ability to produce a certain kind of result. Calling a skill “small” or “big” says more about how we’re looking at it than about the skill itself.
