Description

In air combat there is no Second Place Award. Jet engines are a key part of self-reliance and freedom. Precision manufacturing backed by rigorous theory from many fields, delivers machines that operate reliably for over 8000 hours at the edge of performance. Today Digital Twins capture and advance knowledge on these machines from inception to end-of-life, setting the stage for improved successors through efficient, swift Generative Engineering. The theory is developed starting at the high school graduate level, and advances through the author's 35-year experience of teaching and guiding practitioners in this demanding field. We see how to calculate the interior properties of engines, with under 1% uncertainty in matching specified performance. PYTHON coding provides a low entry threshold, before going to higher sophistication. Rigorous theory is spiced with "Drama in Real Life" anecdotes and examples from the author's classes. While a Digital Twin appears to be a monumental ambition, its core is developed with what is presented here, the process is laid out and clear path shown to the rest. Short chapters on Materials, Rocket Propulsion and Engine Dynamics provide breadth and low entry thresholds. The book is suitable for undergraduates, serving them well as they become practitioners, researchers, teachers and program leaders. Hope you enjoy working with in this field (no, it is not just light reading!) as much as the author does.

About the Author

As an undergraduate at the IIT in Madras (Chennai) in the 1970s I saw the need to understand how to innovate jet engines. I tried to put new-found FORTRAN skills to work on course assignments, with treasured permission to try out the new IBM 370 mainframe on campus - with mixed results. I carried that to the USA where my students had all the fun, learning to "make and fly" their own engines and generate rather than rely on textbooks for performance curves. A design competition brought surprised reviewer comments at how close our students were hitting "next-generation" engine specs. Experience as a Fellow of the NASA Institute of Advanced Concepts, a Boeing Welliver Fellow, and a Sam Nunn Senior Fellow at the interface of international strategic security, technology and policy, all shaped what is here. I am a proud winner of the AIAA/ASEE award for excellence in aerospace education, named for John Leland Atwood, the legendary leader of the X-15 program and much of the R&D procurement process in the USA. This book tries to convey my sheer joy in guiding learners to solve problems, in a very relevant and deadly serious context. Please be patient through my stories, each has a serious point. No, no one ever slept through my classes, though it may have been anxiety rather than joy that kept them alert.
