March, 44 BCE.
After years of civil war, Gaius Julius Caesar has consolidated power over all the Roman Republic. Now, with his enemies within defeated, Caeser may at last turn his attention outward. His first target: the Kingdom of Dacia.
For the first ever time the disparate tribes of Dacia have been united, now under the rule of King Burebista. Previously, Burebista had allied with Pompey; Caesar’s rival during the Civil War to fight against Caesar. Now more recently, he has led raids against the Thracian Kings; allies of Rome and into the Roman provinces of Macedonia and Illyria.
The allies of the republic call for help, and with the hope of stability prevailing once more within Rome’s borders, Caesar plans to march into Dacia and secure the northern borders of Rome and avenge the slights of Burebista. The Roman legions are unparalleled in discipline, but the Dacians are masters of their own lands, protected by the great Danube River and the mighty forested peaks of the Carpathians. Yet the fledgling Dacian realm is still fragile, and it may be that Burebista’s greatest threats shall come from within his own borders…
