The Vratabandha Sanskaar (“VBS”) is one of the most prominent of the 16 Sanskaars. It carried huge significance and was considered the child's second birth. But today, when this topic comes up in a social setting or family discussions, we generally come across three categories of responses:
- We must do it since it is a part of our tradition and an important religious ritual;
- This ritual is obsolete, we should not do it; or
- This ritual is applicable only to Brahmin boys; hence it is not applicable in other cases.
