Description
Midwifery represents one of humanity's oldest and most enduring healthcare practices, fundamentally rooted in the sacred act of bringing new life into the world. The International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) defines midwifery as "a skilled, knowledgeable and compassionate care practice that encompasses the autonomous practice of midwives in partnership with women to provide necessary support, care and advice during pregnancy, labour and the postpartum period, to conduct births on their own responsibility and to provide care for the newborn and the infant." This comprehensive definition transcends the traditional perception of midwifery as merely assistive care, positioning it as a distinct healthcare discipline characterized by holistic, woman-centered care that addresses not only the physiological aspects of reproduction but also the psychological, social, cultural, and spiritual dimensions of the childbearing experience.
