Ganesh Murthy (Appa, as we call him), the protagonist of this book, was born exactly one month after India gained independence from British rule. As the second of five siblings and the eldest son, he spent his early childhood in the serene landscapes of Kerala with his doting grandparents. His youth was marked by travels across the country, including extended stays in Mumbai and Kolkata, where his family eventually settled.
This book is a collection of some of the tales we grew up hearing. We have endeavoured to remain as true to the original narratives as possible, preserving their essence and humour. Yet, beneath the humour lies the poignant story of a child who faced fear and trauma, a child who had to mature far too quickly, and whose dreams were dashed before they could fully form.
An outstanding read for anyone who appreciates heartfelt narratives filled with both laughter and introspection.
Readers go on a poignant journey through the life of the protagonist Appa. Set against the backdrop of post-independence India, this collection of tales captures the essence of childhood in Kerala and beyond, blending humour with deeper emotional truths. Singh skilfully weaves together memories that resonate with readers of all ages. Through Appa’s eyes, we experience the warmth of family bonds, the beauty of travel, and the rich tapestry of Indian culture. The author’s commitment to preserving the original narratives shines through, making each story feel authentic and relatable. Yet, what sets this book apart is its exploration of the complexities of growing up. Appa’s journey is not just one of adventure; it’s also a tale of confronting fear and trauma.
