Folktales in Africa were traditionally told by the moonlight around a village fire after the completion of a long hard day of work.
This book, beautifully illustrated each page, is a collection of such folktales taken from 15 southern African countries. The stories are typical of African oral traditions where nature and animals appear as characters in addition to humans. Familiar themes of jealousy, cleverness, trickery, bravery and compassion infuse these stories.
Each story is followed by a quiz giving information about the country from which the story comes. This makes it a unique book: not only a remarkable read but also an educational tool.
Our children know Indian folktales; they also get exposed to Western folktales.
This book is unique in that it brings African stories before our children. My children found the stories very interesting and different.
Also the stories are so well-illustrated that it is a joy to behold the book.
This book is an absolute delight. I have an EBook and had always wanted to have a physical copy. I am so glad that Pothi.com has made it available to the readers in India.
I use this as a bedtime storybook and it never fails to enthuse my kids. They love the questions at the end of the story as well as the country facts. Did you know that there is a country called Eswatini - formerly known as Swaziland - in Africa?
Heartwarming Tales
This book evokes the comfort of reading tales that have plenty of animal characters that impart values to children in an engaging way. It has the folksy element that makes it a joy for the reader to narrate to a child or for young readers exploring stories from faraway lands. I highly recommended this book to my friends and family! A great gift idea for the holiday season.
