Description

From a small village with no privilege to building one of India’s most inspiring education ecosystems, this is a story where “Impossible” becomes “I Am Possible.”
Mahbubul Hoque’s Journey from Impossible to Education Empire is a powerful biographical narrative that chronicles the extraordinary life of Mahbubul Hoque, a man who rose from poverty in rural Assam to become a transformative force in higher education across North East India.
Born into modest means, Mahbubul Hoque’s early life was shaped by hardship, relentless work, and an unshakable belief in education as the greatest equaliser. With no wealth, no influential connections, and no safety net, he chose a path defined by courage, sacrifice, and vision. Each chapter traces the pivotal moments that shaped his journey, from selling vegetables as a child, enduring personal loss, and facing repeated rejection, to founding institutions that would educate thousands.
This book goes beyond a conventional success story. It reveals the philosophy of EduAccessism - the belief that quality education must be inclusive, affordable, and socially transformative. Through the establishment of schools, colleges, and universities such as USTM and other pioneering institutions, Mahbubul Hoque challenged geographical, social, and economic barriers, redefining what education could achieve in underserved regions.
Interwoven with reflections, leadership lessons, and real-life struggles, the narrative captures the emotional and ethical core of building institutions against overwhelming odds. Endorsements and insights from eminent leaders, academicians, and administrators further illuminate the national significance of his work.
Written after extensive interviews, field research, and close observation, author Rita Farhat Mukand presents an intimate, authentic, and deeply human portrait of a man often called the “Sir Syed Ahmad Khan of North East India”, not by privilege, but by perseverance.
This book is an inspiration for:
• Aspiring entrepreneurs and institution builders
• Educators and policy thinkers
• Students from humble backgrounds
• Readers who believe resilience can rewrite destiny
Mahbubul Hoque’s Journey from Impossible to Education Empire is a testament to the power of faith, vision, and unwavering commitment to social change - proof that one individual can transform lives, landscapes, and the future through education.

About the Author

From the Author

When working with Awaz-the Voice as an independent writer, when on a writing spree about celebrated academicians, I came across an article about Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque, and the contents fascinated me. What he achieved in one lifetime was incredible.

With the assistance of Dr Hafeezur Rahman, an orator, Islamic scholar, and author, former faculty member of JNU and Convenor of the Khusro Foundation, who personally knew the Chancellor, I reached out to him.

I travelled to Meghalaya, and interviewed him. I observed his life up close: His mannerisms and his interactions. I spoke with his staff and faculty, met the local people around, met great educationalists, eminent journalists, politicians, and dignitaries. I met the village folk in the vicinity, and I visited his home and his hometown of Karimganj (now called Sribhumi), and family members, as well as visiting the schools and colleges he established in the area. From all this, I was able to get a panoramic picture of his life and personality.

While Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque is frequently called the “Sir Syed Ahmad Khan of the North East”, the lives of these two men cannot be accurately juxtaposed. Unlike Sir Syed, he did not have the privileges, weighty connections or institutional support that might have facilitated his journey smoothly. Furthermore, his poverty and financial hardships, along with the conflicts he faced due to his community background, created even greater obstacles in his path.

His main positive weapon is a brilliant brain, fortified by hard work, reinforced with the spirit of a possibilitarian who always raised his eyes to see light in the darkest situations.
