In the year 1905 a clerk at a patent office declared “Nothing can move faster than the speed of light”.
In 1915 he again declared “Space and Time can be bend”.
He was none other than the theoretical physicist and greatest scientist of the 20th century Sir Albert Einstein. The first statement is the essence of special theory of relativity which he published in that year. The second statement is the essence of the general theory of relativity. The book is all about what these two statements mean to us.
The write-up is designed to develop the imagination of the reader in order for him to understand the real meaning of the relativity principle. It is a challenge to make students understand such a subject which is far removed from their daily experience. Author has presented it in a very simple and logical manner so that anybody with knowledge of high school math and physics will be able to understand it. Very little mathematics is used and wherever it is used it is simple high school algebra.
It is difficult to shake off old beliefs and experiences which became the foundation of our identity. Modifying the foundation, after the building is raised is not easy. At least new generation should grow on the foundation of new truths. The book is in three parts, the first one is conceptual and other two are theoretical. Those who find difficult to comprehend mathematics can very well skip those parts without loosing the concept, and can revisit it at proper time.
The content of this book may not be easy to understand. One may require to stretch his mind. Einstein was right when he said, ‘A mind once stretched will never comes back to its original state’.
