Over time, I've noted that some devotees are captivated by the question of Kṛṣṇa's actual eye color, and a variety of speculative possibilities abound, including notions that Kṛṣṇa's eyes could be brown or red. Until then, I had never considered such a detailed aspect, but I was fascinated by how deeply devotees wish to know the details of Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa—much like the saying "love is in the detail."
Especially in the realm of devotion, love lies in the detail. It's only natural that devotees harbor an intrinsic desire to explore the enchanting intricacies that envelop the Divinities of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa. I then too found myself pondering the hue of Kṛṣṇa's eyes, while remaining aware that any intellectual knowledge on this subject is but a shadow when contrasted with the indescribable beauty that surely emanates from Their eye color. Despite seeking answers from fellow devotees over the years, I remained bereft of a definitive response. Many just merely mentioned a color, without providing any reference to a specific scriptural source, which left me unimpressed and I was not unconvinced.
While reading the Gauḍīya-śāstras over time, I observed numerous verses that consistently affirm the same eye color, a detail that somehow no one was able to tell me. Interestingly, even prominent Gauḍīya-Vaiṣṇava temples in Vṛndāvana have depicted Kṛṣṇa with eye colors that differ from what is outlined in the śāstras. So I started to collect these references, which I will now present in this book.
The Gauḍīya-ācāryas are quite precise in giving the transcendental eye color of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa, they almost always use specific flowers to indicate Their eye colors. Therefore, in one chapter, I analyze the various Sanskrit words used by the ācāryas to describe Their eyes, which are, not surprisingly, all flowers, and determine their botanical names. After identifying which specific flowers are meant with their Sanskrit terms, I showcase real images of these (lotus) flowers to reveal their astonishing beauty and offer a
small clue as to what the eye color of Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa could resemble.
Additionally, this book addresses and resolves two prevalent misconceptions that often obscure the accurate understanding of Kṛṣṇa's eye color from the Sanskrit texts.
Furthermore, my research into Kṛṣṇa's eye color unveiled another intriguing and captivating insight: The eye color of all the Vrajavāsīs, and which will reveal another secret of Braj – The transcendental Braja-genetics!
In the final section, an extensive appendix explains why Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa's eye colors are depicted through flowers and gemstones, as well as why we find throughout the Vedas an abundant use of natural objects, particularly in āyurveda- vāstu-, jyotiṣa-, tantra- and bhakti-śāstras. Moreover, this exploration unveils the substantial connection between nature, the Vedas, and Vedic culture, reaching its climax in the floral words and the flowery world of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa's playground—Śrī Vṛndāvana—offering another unique insight into the sweetness of Braj.
In conclusion, this book provides evidence for the eye color not only of Kṛṣṇa and Rādhā but also of all Vrajavāsīs, it illustrates what their eye color looks like and elucidates the extraordinary significance of nature and natural objects in the Gauḍīya-śāstras and the Vedas.
