The lanes of Banaras are crooked—some take unexpected turns, while others are so narrow that when two people come face to face, one must press against the wall to let the other pass. Yet, the people who inhabit these very lanes have hearts that are straight and true—simple, sensitive, full of warmth, and devoted to their relationships until their very last breath.

Crooked Lanes, Straightforward Souls is a novel about these very lanes, ghats, temples, neighbourhoods, and the people who call them home. Through the lives of its diverse characters, it explores love, friendship, sacrifice, crime, remorse, separation, social change, and the profound depths of human relationships.

In these stories, love sometimes appears complete even in its incompleteness. Somewhere, a criminal discovers the human being hidden within himself and, after struggling against the circumstances that shaped his life, transforms into a teacher. Elsewhere, the love between Mannu Guru and Kesar becomes a tragic reflection of Banaras’s changing cultural landscape, while through Basanti Chachi, we witness the pain of an old Banaras being uprooted by the relentless pace of development.

The lives of these characters travel along different paths, yet their stories gradually intertwine in ways they scarcely realise. Someone is left behind on the banks of the Ganga; someone leaves their memories embedded in the walls of an old house; and someone, in the city of Mahadev, holds on to love and faith until their very last breath.

This is not merely a collection of stories about Banaras. It is a search for the Banaras that is not built of bricks and stones, but of people’s memories, relationships, and the warmth of human connection.

Crooked Lanes, Straightforward Souls is the story of those who, even amid the changing tides of time, strive to preserve the Banaras that lives within them.

(बनारस की गलियाँ टेढ़ी हैं—कहीं अचानक मुड़ जाती हैं, कहीं इतनी संकरी कि दो लोग आमने-सामने आ जाएँ तो एक को दीवार से सटकर निकलना पड़े। लेकिन इन्हीं गलियों में रहने वाले लोग अपने मन से सीधे हैं—सरल, भावुक, अपनत्व से भरे और रिश्तों को आखिरी साँस तक निभाने वाले।
“टेढ़ी गलियाँ, सीधे लोग” बनारस की इन्हीं गलियों, घाटों, मंदिरों, मोहल्लों और उनमें बसने वाले लोगों की कहानियों का उपन्यास है। इसमें अलग-अलग पात्रों की जिंदगी के माध्यम से प्रेम, दोस्ती, त्याग, अपराध, पश्चाताप, बिछड़ना, सामाजिक बदलाव और इंसानी रिश्तों की गहराई को सामने लाया गया है।
इन कहानियों में कहीं प्रेम अपने अधूरेपन में भी पूरा दिखाई देता है, कहीं एक अपराधी के भीतर छिपा इंसान परिस्थितियों से लड़कर शिक्षक बन जाता है। कहीं मन्नू गुरु और केसर का प्रेम बनारस के बदलते सांस्कृतिक संसार की त्रासदी बन जाता है, तो कहीं बसंती चाची के माध्यम से विकास की तेज रफ्तार के बीच उजड़ते पुराने बनारस का दर्द सामने आता है।
इन पात्रों की जिंदगी अलग-अलग रास्तों से गुजरती है, लेकिन उनकी कहानियाँ एक-दूसरे से अनजाने में जुड़ती जाती हैं। कोई गंगा के किनारे छूट जाता है, कोई किसी पुराने मकान की दीवारों में अपनी यादें छोड़ जाता है और कोई महादेव के शहर में अपने प्रेम और विश्वास को आखिरी साँस तक थामे रहता है।
यह सिर्फ बनारस की कहानियों का संग्रह नहीं, बल्कि उस बनारस की तलाश है जो ईंट-पत्थरों से नहीं, बल्कि लोगों की स्मृतियों, रिश्तों और अपनत्व से बना है।
“टेढ़ी गलियाँ, सीधे लोग” उन लोगों की कथा है जो बदलते समय के बीच भी अपने भीतर के बनारस को बचाए रखते हैं।
