5*- Preventive Health That Makes Sense
Bala Kumar's non-fiction health guide, America's Lifeline for Better Health: Preventive Care,
challenges readers to focus on using his 21-Day Program, with ten simple steps, to focus on
healing their lives from the common health issues that are facing Americans today. These issues
are based on people making poor lifestyle choices. He quotes some sobering statistics to
highlight our current health care crisis in America. He argues that our current system is
inefficient, unaffordable, and inaccessible for many Americans.
He offers alarming data and anecdotes to back up his claims. He believes that by focusing on
preventive health care, we can reduce long-term costs and improve outcomes. This, in turn, will
reduce spending on medical care and improve the quality of life for many. His message is urgent
and overdue!
Kumar makes his points very clear. His discussion about the paradox of having high healthcare
spending alongside widespread chronic disease and suboptimal health habits was sobering. He
sees the system as prioritizing treatment over prevention. He cites statistics that only 2.7% of US
adults maintain a healthy lifestyle! We've got to change this. He offers information from sources
that are provided in the references that support his claims.
Kumar's personal narrative is compelling. He discusses his own transformative steps in making
lifestyle changes that helped him to lose weight, avoid back surgery, free him from diabetes
medication, and quit smoking. His personal transformation gives him credibility and relatability.
This will be helpful to readers, such as myself, who struggle with sustaining lifestyle changes.
Structurally, I found the book to be accessible and well-organized. It is divided into two parts:
advocacy for the necessity of preventive healthcare in the US, and a practical 21-day, ten step
lifestyle change program. He includes a chapter on "Key Rules" for readers who either want a
quick orientation or those who are looking for the steps without reading the whole book.
I recommend reading the whole book, but if just reading the Key Rules is all someone wants to
do to get started, then they should at least do that. While he is not a healthcare professional, I felt
that Kumar's background in software engineering and consulting contributes to his problem-
solving, process-driven mindset. He manages to convey a great deal of information in a concise
way in which readers will feel motivated rather than overwhelmed.
