Description

What does the Quran look like when it is read in chronological order rather than through the arrangement of the completed text? And what emerges when its earliest revelations are examined against the historical circumstances in which they are traditionally understood to have appeared?

Unravelling the Quran – Volume 1 takes a critical historical approach to the earliest phase of the Quranic proclamation. Beginning with the traditionally identified early Meccan revelations, it traces the development of the message and examines how its themes, tone, and claims unfold within a changing social and historical environment.

The book asks difficult questions about revelation, prophecy, divine authority, judgment, morality, opposition to Muhammad, and the relationship between scripture and circumstance. It examines not only what the Quran says, but also when it is said, to whom it is addressed, and what historical pressures may help explain its changing emphases.

The analysis begins with the Quran itself and then examines hadith, early Islamic traditions, classical tafsir, and other historical sources. Particular attention is given to chronology, competing accounts, the retrospective nature of much of the surviving Islamic tradition, and the problems involved in reconstructing events that occurred many generations before the major sources were written down.

This is not a devotional reading of the Quran. It is an invitation to examine one of the world's most influential scriptures through chronology, context, evidence, and critical inquiry.

Does the Quran appear differently when its verses are read as products of a developing historical moment rather than as an already completed theological system?

Unravelling the Quran – Volume 1 is the first volume of a multi-volume study examining the origins, structure, and development of Islamic scripture.

About the Author

A. K. Verner is an independent researcher whose work explores religious scriptures through history, chronology, textual analysis, and the traditions that shaped their interpretation. His particular interest lies in examining how religious ideas develop when texts are placed back into the historical settings in which they emerged.

Rather than approaching scripture from a devotional or confessional standpoint, Verner asks a different set of questions: What was said? When was it said? What circumstances surrounded it? And how did later generations come to understand it? His approach draws on the Quran, early traditions, hadith, classical commentaries, and comparative scholarship, with particular attention to chronology and the historical distance of later sources.

Unravelling the Quran – Volume 1 is the first volume of his multi-volume project examining the origins, structure, and development of Islamic scripture.
