Ms. Alamelu's portrayals of an army man’s life, household and uncertainties of life, are picturesque enough in ‘A Soldier’s Life’.
‘The War within: without’, shows the fatality of war and the frailties of life- the same folly repeated without any gain to fulfill the ambition of a few!
‘The unforgettable Winter of 1971’, brings back vividly the memories close to Anne Frank’s Diary that describes how the Jews in Germany hid in attics and bunkers to escape from the Nazi onslaughts of World War II!
The father's Medals, marshals nostalgic memories of army life. Holding her father's medals over her own achievements makes one partake in the celebrations of army life of many like her!
On the whole, a big success for the author, even on her debue and a must read for all!
A comforting read
This book felt like a mug of hot chocolate on a cold winter evening. I loved the way the author has recounted every stage of her life in a very tasteful manner. Part one and part two of the book were my favourite.
I love how Mrs. Alamelu has very artistically recounted about military life in part one of the book. My favourite in part one would definitely be “The war within; without”.
The second part of the book mostly is about various episodes in one’s life. My favourites were “The deception”, “The care taker”, “Lost and “Found”.
Being a new mom I really enjoyed reading “The seven stages of parenting” and “The grass greener”.
This book is a must read for every logophile!
Lovely collection
It was interesting to read about the lives of soldiers and their families, and the untold heroism of lonely wives holding the fort. The lost and found rings, the trials of care giving, the frailty of life, nature's caring and giving, monkeys, cats, crows -- a variety of subjects have been described with flair and feeling. Kudos to the author!

Really thrilled to read the book on "My father's medals" by Smt. Alamelu Lakshmi Narayanan.
1.The standard of English was toooo Good. I had to often refer Google to get the meaning of more words.
2. Description of nature and its beauty and more about the himalayan glaciers is simply fabulous.
3.Could understand a glimpse of the challenges of a military officer's better half in her daily family duties.
4. The feelings of a father's absence and longing for his arrival by the children of an army official is really heart touching.
5. Total dedicated and patriotic service of the military personnel is the real pinnacle in the book.
My pranams to her for everything.
A Fresh and Breezy Read
This book is a delight for every poetry enthusiast. It seamlessly transports the readers into the world of the characters, which has been portrayed with the right blend of humour and wit. From a soldier’s battlefield to life’s battlefield, the author has covered it all.
I particularly enjoyed ‘Moment in Time’, portraying the author’s infectious joy in reconnecting with a long-lost friend and part 3 of the book, which takes us from the mundane city life, straight to nature’s lap. Even the poem, ‘The First Home’ makes one yearn to go back to their first home.
This is the right book for anyone looking for a fresh and breezy read with a dash of humour.
Perceiving the world around
A charming collection of poems and a couple of reminiscences in prose, with nostalgia, humour and doses of realism. windowsill). The prose pieces have a rare vintage feel and give insights into life in the seventies and earlier. The poems are expressive and sometimes very visual. There is wisdom, kindness, empathy and humour: one can hear the gentle chuckle in some of the lines.
Life's difficulties are portrayed too, but overall the mood is joyful. I loved ‘Catch 22… Rescue’ about how villagers rescue the monkeys who torment them!
An emblematic tribute to a soldier
Mrs. Lakshminarayan’s narrative poesy is a collectors item. Simple, yet nostalgic and thoughtful. Being a narrative biography, the aesthetic language used was the principle feature which kept me hooked. This book sublimely portrays the infamous phrase “ Every individual who is struggling to fulfilling his/her responsibilities is a true warrior in all walks of life.” In a nutshell it is an insightful read to recline with a cup of hot tea.
